    Late 17th century, from French anecdote, from Ancient Greek ἀνέκδοτος (anekdotos, "accounts unpublished"), from ἀν- (an-, "not, un-") + ἔκδοτος (ekdotos, "published"), from ἐκδίδωμι (ekdidōmi, "I publish"), from ἐκ- (ek, "out") + δίδωμι (didōmi, "I give").
