Origin
From Persian ـستان (-estÄn), from Middle Persian -stʾn', from Old Persian ðŽ¿ðŽ«ðŽ ðŽ´, from Proto-Iranian *stÄna-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sthÄna, from Proto-Indo-European *stehâ‚‚- ("to stand"), whence also English verbs stay and stand. Compare Avestan ð¬¯ð¬™ð¬ð¬¥ð¬€ and Sanskrit सà¥à¤¥à¤¾à¤¨.
