• Azerbaijan

    Pronunciation

    • UK IPA: /ˌæz.É™(r).baɪˈ(d)ʒɑːn/

    Origin

From Persian آذربایجان, from Arabic أذربيجان, Arabicized form of late Middle Persian (Ādurbādagān), from early Middle Persian (Āturpātakān, "Atropatene"), from the name of Atropates, the Persian nobleman who founded the independent kingdom of Atropatene. Compare Old Armenian Ատրպատական and Armenian Ադրբեջան: the first preserves the Middle Iranian form, the second is from an Arabicized form. For the suffix compare Old Armenian -ական, from Iranian.
