1538, from Medieval Latin Russi ("Russians").
Ultimately from Byzantine Greek Ρωσία (whence also Russian РоÑÑÐ¸Ñ (RossÃja, "Russia")) from an earlier (10th century) ethnonym Ῥῶς (RhÅs) (Arabic روس, Old East Slavic РуÑÑŒ ("Rus")).
