    Full definition of aetheogamous

    Adjective

    aetheogamous

    1. (botany) Of the nature of an aetheogam.

    Usage notes

Being ultimately derived from the two vowels ἀή (alpha-eta: aē), rather than the diphthong αἰ (alpha-iota: ai), the initial ae- of aetheogamous can only properly be written as two separate letters (ae), with a diaeresis atop the e (as aëtheogamous) being optional; the spellings *ætheogamous and *etheogamous are, therefore, erroneous.
