    Pronunciation

    Full definition of avolition

    Noun

    avolition

    (uncountable)
    1. Lack of initiative or goals; one of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. The person may wish to do something, but the desire is without power or energy.

    Usage notes

This is not laziness. Avolition is a clinical term usually present as a comorbid symptom of another disease or as a side effect from medication. A diagnosis of schizophrenia is the most prominent case, where sufferers have extreme difficulty summoning the desire for even ordinary activities, such as obtaining employment or even to go shopping.
