From Middle French benjoin, from Spanish benjuÃ, Portuguese beijoin, Italian benzoi, from Arabic لبان جاوي (lubÄn jÄwÄ«, "Javanese frankincense"). The initial lu was probably lost because it was taken as the definite article in Romance. Compare oliban.
