From Calicut, in India, from where the cloth was originally exported, from Medieval Latin കോഴികàµà´•àµ‹à´Ÿàµ ("w"), from koyil ("palace") + kota ("fort"), “fortified palaceâ€, with ‘y’ replaced by interchangeable ‘zh’.
