From Middle English, from Anglo-Norman chamberlenc, Old French chamberlayn, chamberlenc ("chamberlain"), from Frankish *kamerling ("chamberlain"), equivalent to *kamer ("chamber") + *-ling ("-ling"). Cognate with Old High German chamarling ("chamberlain"). More at chamber, -ling.
