Graham
Pronunciation
- IPA: /ˈɡreɪ.əm/, /ˈɡreəm/
- also GenAm IPA: /ɡræm/GenAm Rhymes: -æm
- Homophones: gram, gramme GenAm
- The General American pronunciation of graham has merged with that of gram, because of æ-tensing. In many cases, the vowel has not actually flattened, but æ-tensing has caused many vowels (including in graham) to tense to the phoneme . Sometimes this vowel is pronounced as a true anyway, because speakers interpret the -aha- in graham as the phoneme due to conventional allophony. See also mayonnaise, where æ-tensing has a similar effect.
Origin
Named after Sylvester Graham.
