From Middle English slouthe, slewthe, from Old English slǣwþ ("sloth, indolence, laziness, inertness, torpor"), from Proto-Germanic *slaiwiþŠ("slowness, lateness"), equivalent to slow + -th. Cognate with Scots sleuth ("sloth, slowness").
