    Origin

    Old English walhhnutu, from Proto-Germanic *walhaz ("Celt, Roman, foreigner") (whence Walloon, Welsh) + *hnutuz (whence nut). Cognate with Dutch walnoot, German Walnuss, Swedish valnöt. Compare more recent term Welsh onion, which also uses Welsh to mean “foreign”.
