From Old English widewe ("") or wuduwe ("") or widuwe ("widow"), from Proto-Germanic *widuwÇ, from Proto-Indo-European *hâ‚widʰéwhâ‚‚. Cognate with Dutch weduwe, German Witwe, and also Latin vidua, French veuve, Bulgarian вдовица.
