Ludolf, a German from Erfurt and an œcumenist, was published in Latin at Oxford in 1696; it was a sensitive and astonishingly advanced description by a polyglot (with a missionary purpose in mind) of what was then a dialectus vulgaris, not suitable for any literary purpose excepting the law code.
