From Middle English, via Old French from Arabic كالانجان (ḵalanjÄn), probably from Chinese 高粱酒姜 (gÄoliángjiÄng), from 高粱酒 (gÄoliáng, a district in Guongdong Province, China) + 姜 (jiÄng, "ginger").
